Store bought barbecue sauce can be filled with junk, high in sugar and carbs. It’s so easy to make your own homemade low carb barbecue sauce. The hardest part is chopping the onion, the rest is easy as pie! Here is a versatile recipe – swap out spices if you’d like, or add some more spice or sweet if you’d like. You can use any sweetener of your choice based on your dietary needs.
Healthy Homemade Low Carb Barbecue Sauce Recipe
1 TBSP coconut oil or olive oil
1 cup sweet onion, diced small
1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
1 1/2 cups homemade chicken stock (or beef or vegetable)
1 TBSP Balsamic Vinegar
1/2 tsp mustard powder
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp oregano
1 Tbsp chili powder
1/2 – 1 tsp stevia (or truvia, honey, agave – whatever you prefer)
1/8 tsp sea salt
Fresh ground black pepper, to taste
Add oil to a pan, heat up and add the onion. Cook, stirring gently, until onions are translucent. Add the rest of the ingredients. Stir and simmer on low, covered, for about 20 minutes. It should thicken up. Enjoy on meats, in sandwiches or as a dip!
